Lesson Plan for teaching rhythmic themes from the second movement of Mendelssohn's "Scottish Symphony"

RHYTHMIC THEME A

 
 

SPEECH PATTERN FOR THEME A:
"This piece is very fast and so we have to count it qui-ckly or we'll miss it.
If we are late then we will force old Fe-lix Men-del-ssohn to come back for a vis-it."
 
 

Activities:
1.  Teacher reviews "building blocks" with students. (quarter notes, eighth notes, dotted eighth notes,     and sixteenth notes)
2.  Teacher asks students to "patsch"
3.  Teacher asks students to repeat speech pattern.
4.  Teacher shows students body percussion pattern. (snaps=dotted eighths; claps=eighths; patsch=sixteenths; stomps=quarters)
5.  Teacher asks students to perform body percussion.
6.  Teacher asks students to combine speech pattern with body percussion.
7.  Teacher asks students to perform both with a recording of the piece.
8.  Teacher transfers body percussion pattern to unpitched rhythm instruments.
9.  Teacher assigns instruments to students and asks them to perform rhythm with the recording.

RHYTHMIC THEME B

 

SPEECH PATTERN FOR RHTYHM B:
"This is the theme called 'B',  Just wait and you will see."

Activities:
1.  Teacher reviews "building blocks" with students. (half notes, dotted quarter notes, eighth notes, and dotted eighth notes)
2.  Teacher echo-claps the rhythm as students respond in canon.
3.  Teacher asks students to repeat the speech pattern.
4.  Teacher shows students the body percussion pattern. (snaps=dotted eighth notes; claps= half notes; patsch=eighth notes)
5.  Teacher asks students to perform body percussion.
6.  Teacher asks students to combine the speech pattern with body percussion.
7.  Teacher asks students to perform both with a recording of the piece.
8.  Teacher transfers body percussion pattern to unpitched rhythm instruments.
9.  Teacher assigns instruments to students and asks them to perform rhythm with the recording.

RHYTHM FOR THEME C:

SPEECH PATTERN FOR RHYTHM C:
"This is the se-cond theme from the "Scot-tish Sym-pho-ny" num-ber three.
If you don't like this theme than you can just go back to the theme B."

Activities:
1.  Teacher reviews "building blocks" with students. (eighth notes, and eighth/sixteenth notes)
2.  Teacher teaches rhythm through an echo-clapping drill.
3.  Teacher asks students to repeat the speech pattern.
4.  Teacher asks students to perform speech pattern while clapping the rhythm.
5.  Teacher asks students to perform the speech pattern and the clapping with the recording.
6.  Teacher asks students to keep the steady beat while clapping and transfer the rhythm to their feet.
7.  Teacher asks students to perform step #6 with the recording.
